HE WAS AND STILL IS ONE OF GOD'S GREAT MEN. HE CHANGED THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER. I WAS PRIVILEGED TO HAVE KNOWN HIM. I MET HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE HOTEL AMERICANA WHEN HE AND LANE KIRKLAND INTRODUCED ALEXANDER SOLZHENITSYN. HARRY WAS SO FULL OF ENERGY AND LIFE THAT DAY. HE LIT THE PLACE UP WITH HIS ENERGY AND LOVE. THE DAY WAS JULY 9 1975. LATER HARRY WORKING WITH LANE KIRKLAND MADE IT POSSIBLE TO SEND CELL PHONES TO POLAND'S SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT. HARRY AND AFL CIO WERE LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COLLAPSE OF WORLD COMMUNISM. GOD BLESS YOU HARRY WHERE EVER YOUR ARE. AND PLEASE ACCEPT THE THANKS OF TENS OF MILLIONS WHO THROUGH YOUR EFFORTS ARE TODAY FREE.

What a fitting tribute to a true humanitarian. Oh how I miss him calling me Henry Shapiro's beautiful brown-eyed daughter. He was the center of New York City and the labor movement. I still miss him. I was honored to know him and work with him. I will always keep his memory alive...

I am very pleased to see your website for Harry Van ArsdaleJr. I worked for/and with him for many years. I am using this venue to inform you of the passing of my father Henry Shapiro on February 11 2005 who was one of the few people Harry confided in. He actually moved my family next to him when he moved into Electchester. My father dedicated his life to Local 3 was on call and available 24 hrs a day 7 days a week with no vacations. His job and the Union was his life and he had a fond & close connection with Harry. My father's website is http://henry-shapiro.memory-of.com I think he deserves some recognition for all he did. You can e-mail me at the above address if you so desire. Thank you.

I was an 3rd year apprentice in Local 3 when Harry died I was at St Pat's that the day he was buried Harry loved the apprentices and would come into the union meetings and we would all chant Harry Harry. I turned out in 90 and moved to Arizona in 94 and will never forget such a great man Harry was and How much He did for us.

I am the Head of Policy and Strategy for the new British union Community - a merged union between the Steelworkers and Textile workers here. However, I worked as Research and later National Officer for Education for the Electricians union the EETPU and its successors from 1974-2003. I was lucky enough to meet Harry on one of his visits to Britain to brief him on British trade union developments and I was also lucky to visit with Local 3 in 1986, where I met Thomas Van Arsdale and Denis McSpedon, who stayed at my house in London afterwards. Reading this tribute to Harry reminded me how much my own ideas about the future of trade unions in a bitter world owe to him and your union in New York. We are building in my new union a style of unionism that takes the union into the community (hence our new name) along with our work in the workplace. In my small way I will be following Harry's example wherever I can and I wish you all well at this Christmas time 2004. Fraternally.....John Lloyd

HIS INFINITE WISDOM VISION AND DEDICATION TO WHICH HARRY GAVE ALL IS A TRIBUTE TO US ALL. HIS LEGACY HAS AND ALWAYS AND WILL ALWAYS INSPIRE US ALL. THEIR IS SOMETHING ABOUT UNITY AND BROTHERHOOD THAT MUST ALWAYS REMAIN IN THE HEARTS OF LOCAL 3. IT WAS NOT TITANS OF INDUSTRY THAT BUILT THIS LOCAL BUT A BROTHERHOOD OF MAN. TODAY HARRY STILL WOULD HAVE BEEN AN INSPIRATION TO ALL. I TRULY BELIEVE HE WOULD STILL ROLL-UP HIS SLEEVES AND LEAD THE GOOD FIGHT. THE WORKING MAN HAS A RIGHT TO WHAT IS FAIR AND JUST. THIS IN MY HEART I BELIEVE IS PART OF WHAT HIS MESSAGE WAS ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT OUR PROFESSION IS WHAT UNITES US. THE TOUCH OF UNION BURNS BRIGHT HARRY. FOR AS LONG AS I BREATHE I WILL NEVER LET IT BURN OUT.....FOR IT BURNS WITHIN ME ETERNAL! THIS IS HIS LEGACY! THANK YOU HVA JR. AND MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

My Grandfather was an ironworker. My step-Grandfather was a business agent for the Local. My mother said he always referred to Mr. V as Solomon. I am hoping to be accepted at the Cornell school of Industrial and Labor relations. My uncle is a union electrician my cousin is in the carpenters union. They have all benefitted from Mr.VanArsdale's legacy of fair and equitable bargaining. The web site was a great help to me.

Hello to all I believe Harry Van Arsdale Jr. to be one of the greatest labor leader of the 20th. century. My father work long and hard in 30's & 40's. And instilled in me the value of the labor movement. God bless all that came before meand I pray for those that came after me.

I had forgotten what a driving force Mr. Van Arsdale was in the labor movement in NYC. Is there a way to train men to carry on his zeal and his commitment to labor and the working men and women of this city state and country? Labor's clout has declined so terribly in this day and age. I suffered through a devastating strike in 1986 and I've never seen one since in this city that has succeeded. He and others like Michael Quill will be remembered by workers all over the New York area.

It is amazing one man had such vision - and was able to have his visions become reality - if only there were more like him today. We as a society seem more able to break down rather than build up or create. Here's to a great man who was well ahead of his time.
